Along with trust, fear, and power, betrayal is an important theme in The Golden Compass.

What makes betrayal so important to the plot?
Betrayal is important because it has to happen. Lyra had to betray Roger so he would be a sacrifice to get to the other world.
Who betray's whom? Why?
Lyra betrays Roger although she did not do this intentionally,. THey were going to her uncles for protection not to sacrifice him.
Is Lyraa's understanding of betrayal the same as ours?
No we would not see this as betrayal because she did not know this was going tro happen. We view betrayal as intentionally setting a person up.

Discuss the reason(s) you chose the book that will become the topic of your third essay. Did you choose it for the story? the illustrations? the controversial topic it covers? Is it a book that you can relate to on a personal level or one that you think would be helpful to someone that you know?

I choose this book because i like the story. I choose it because i think it can help children cope with moving or switching schools or losing someone they love. Even though this book is about the asian camps i feel it can relate in a greater sense.

Write about your first impression of what you've read so far in What Johnny Shouldn't Read. Are you surprised, shocked, horrified, intrigued, disgusted, or some other adjective, by it?

I was very suprised and shocked i could not believe how many court cases there are that are about a book dispute. i can't believe how people got mad over a girl fighting how finding yourself during adolescence was unexceptable. Everyone struggles through this time and some people it helps to read a book and relate and know some one feels like them. I cant imagine how this was viewed as unexceptable to read. arguing sabout books on how to build a fire because it teches survival is mans will instead of God's is silly. God desined the mind to think so man can build fire and survive.

Milton argues that society needs a free marketplace of ideas, a streaming fountain of knowledge as he calls it, in order to grow and progress. Does our media have a responsibility to contribute only objective information into that marketplace? Why?

I believe that our media should only state the facts and let the people decide how they are going to perceive it. We should think for ourselves because in turn the media is handicapping some peoples abbilities to think for theirselves. Although the media is a buisness and needs to make money so they provide the stories with a spin intended to please their viewers instead of stating the truth which would benefit all.
